Question
QUESTION: hi, Renee i was wondering if you could help me out, i have my husky booked in for an ultrasound to see if she is pregnant which will be on the 37th day after being caught will the vet be able to tell me how many pups we are having at this time or is it too early? and should she now be sleeping where shes going to be having the pups? thankyou in advance for your advice!

ANSWER: Hi Debbie. 37 days should be good. However, don't get disappointed if it doesn't show anything, or doesn't show much. I prefer x-rays done after day 50 myself. I have known dogs to be at about 37 days and had an ultrasound that showed the dog wasn't pregnant only for her to whelp a litter. If the scan doesn't show anything, then I'd wait and have some x-rays done. About the whelping box, she doesn't have to sleep in it now, unless she just wants to. About a week or so before she's due, get her use to her whelping area. Good luck, and if I can help with anything else, let me know!

QUESTION: Is there any risks with an x-ray or is it the same as a scan and will she need to have her belly shaved as with a scan? i am quiet sure she is expecting because she is getting quiet big already and is much more hungry than she has ever been before and is always on the look out for food like never before! sorry for the 20 questions but i really appreciated your reply last time and i am quiet nervous for her thankyou once again x ps how often should she be wormed now

Answer
Hi! Ask as many questions as you need, that's what we're here for. Her belly won't need to be shaved or anything. If the x-ray is done after day 50, it should be safe. I've never had any problems with any of my girls when doing it, don't think I've ever heard of any other breeder having problems with the x-rays either. The x-ray will show puppy spines, skulls, ect. The vet will count the spines. It's not 100% in predicting how many pups, but it will tell you close to it, and if there are any really big ones in there. As for the worming, I wouldn't worm her again until you worm the pups. Worm meds can be dangerous during pregnancy, so it's best to worm her either before she goes into heat, or when you worm the pups for the first time. Let me know if I can help with anything else!
