Question
My boxer is almost 4.  she got loose while in heat and met up with a neighbor dog (my husband wasn't paying attention... grr) and last week we noticed she was a little pudgy.  Saturday night whe went into labor (i guess... pacing and nesting and panting, but no noticable contractions)... Sometime Monday morning she had one single puppy.  the puppy is one very healthy little boy and has plenty of milk.  there was alot of green discharge everywhere, but she seemed fine and the discharge is gone, she still is bleeding but it is a watery brown.  she has been messing in the house,  drinking alot of water, refusing her food (I mashed up canned salmon and rice for her and she seems to like that).  She vomitted this morning, but has kept down todays food.  she seems ok otherwise, a little tired and her nose isn't as wet as normal, but taking good care of her boy. Is this normal, am I just a nervous grandma?

Answer
Hi Heather. This is very normal. It sounds like mom is doing everything she's suppose to. The discharge usually lasts 2-3 weeks, but tapering off, so there shouldn't be a whole lot in a week or so. Make sure she eats very good to keep plenty of milk for her puppy. Fix her whatever she wants for now. You may want to take her temp once a day for the first week to make sure she's not getting an infection. Good luck, and if I can help with anything else, let me know!
