Question
I have a 3 year old miniature Schnauzer. We want to breed her.  We have been told that the best time is just before her cycle, when there is swelling.  I was also told after the 9th day of spotting.  My question is, When is the best time to breed her and get results?  Also is it better to bring the male to the female or the female to the male, or does it matter?   thank you for your time.

Dave.

Answer
Hi Dave

Truthfully, the best time to breed her is when she's ovulating.  That will guarantee you results.  A progesterone test will tell you when she's prime.

First she'll swell, then she'll bleed, THEN she'll stand.  Typically between days 9 and 15 if you are counting.

If the male you are using is experienced, you can bring him to her. But either way works.  But one breeding  may not be enough, you may have to bring them together a few times during the course of a week.

Before you take her to an outside male, make sure that brucellois test is done on him to keep your female healthy and infection free.

Good luck
