Havanese after whelping

Question
Hello,
My havanese had 4 lovely puppies yesterday. She is 2 years old and that's her first time. We didn't witness the birth of the last one - it seemed to be over so we gave her some privacy and saw another puppy when we came back. Is it recommended to have an US to make sure the placenta is out?
The Dam takes care of them and she is very excited. She is still panting, is this normal?
Thanks.

Answer
Hi Sarah

She could still be the in whelping process and ultra sound won't tell you much more.

If she's not in distress but panting lightly, she could either a) have another pup or b) getting ready to expel the afterbirth/placenta's.  This can take up to 24 hours.

You want to ensure that she is not staining or has a foul odor, everything is normal.
