Question
QUESTION: My female puppy is about 8 months old and just had her first heat cycle. Her nipples swelled up and two of them turned purple like bruising. She also might have been bred. Should I be concerned or is this normal?

ANSWER: Hi Miranda.  It is normal for the nipples to swell in female dogs that are in heat, due to elevated hormone levels.  However, purple, bruise like, areas can be a sign of a medical condition and should be examined by your veterinarian.

Good luck, and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have additional questions

QUESTION: I talked to my vet and she didn't seem too concerned. May I ask what medical condition it could be? Thank you!

Answer
Hi Maranda.  If your vet knows your dog well, and she is not concerned, then I'm sure all is well.

Purple, bruising like areas, in a dogs mammary glands can be a sign of an infection, and or tumors.  Other symptoms to watch for are, elevated temperature, pain, and hard swollen areas.

Good luck, and please do  not hesitate to contact me if you have additional questions.
