Question
Hi, I have a very small chihuahua who is about 3-4lbs and 3 years old.She is very healthy but skinny. I would like to know if I would be able to breed her or is it possible that she could be too small? If she is able to be bred, should I help her to fill out more with supplements or wet food beforehand? Thank you

Answer
Hi Elaine. Is there any way you can send me a picture of her? First thing I would do is if she hasn't been wormed in a while, I'd worm her before her next heat cycle. If she's severy underweight, I would try to get some weight on her before she was bred. However, if she's just a tad bit underweight, then I wouldn't try to pile the pounds on her. During pregnancy, I also wouldn't try to make her gain too much weight as this could hurt her during whelping, and maybe even cause the pups to get too big for her to pass naturally. The first thing I would do is to take her to the vet for a check up to make sure that everything's ok, and see what he thinks about her weight.
