Question

Milo
I have a 7 months old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who I am considering studding out once he turns one. I am not doing it to make money, I am doing it to try and get a Blenheim female and once we do I will get him fixed. My question is, once he has bred with a female will his personality change? or habits? I have heard from one breeder that they will begin to hump and pee on everything. Is this true? He has already started to hike his leg (but only on plants outside) and began to hump certain toys but once I took them away he stopped. I love him just how he is, so will letting him bred a few times change him?

Answer
Hi Amy. I'd wait until he gets closes to two before breeding him. He needs to finish growing before the stress of being a stud dog is put on him. It depends, some dogs will change after they are bred. Some become more aggressive with other dogs, some will mark everything, ect. It's the chance you take when you breed a male. Some dogs don't really change much. As for the humping thing, if you're wanting him to be a stud dog, don't stop him from these behaviors. As long as he's not humping people, he's fine. If you stop him now, when you want him to breed, he may not because he's confused as to what you want him to do. Give him his toys back and let him practice.:-) P.S. He's a pretty boy.
