QuestionMy Springer Spaniel started labor last night. She delivered two puppies within about 20 minutes of each other, the last being at 7:45 p.m. We waited for the others and nothing came. It is now 7:00 a.m and still no signs of the other puppies. We can feel and see that there are more dogs. What should we do?
AnswerHi Quincy
Have you taken her up for a walk? A nice brisk walk (of course you'll have to have her on a leash or she won't go) around the back yard sometimes is enough for a pup to get repositioned and get things moving again. Vanilla ice cream (calcium) can also bring on contractions.
The alternative is a shot of oxytocin from the vet and possibly a c-section if a pup is stuck. 11 hours is a very long time to wait. If things don't progress in the next 30 minutes, I would be off to the vet.
Good luck
