Question
I have a peke that I have bred for the second time. Her ist litter went well and we had 4 beautiful babies. We keep 2 and sold 2. I have bred her again, with a different male this time and she gave birth, with no complications, to 6 adorable babies 3 girls and 3 boys. they were born this Monday (day 61 from breeding) and sadly to say we lost 2 boys yesterday (thursday) and the other male today. I am absolutely heartbroken!! My concern is this. The remaining puppies seem to be doing well so far 2 of the girls are so tiny. They were the smallest (only 4 and 4 1/2 oz today) but are very active, nurse very well and dont appear to be in any distress. The 3rd girl (8 oz. today) seems to be sleeping all the time. She is not nearly as active as the others but is defintely growing. At times when I check, I think, oh my god we lost her but when I touch her she moves about and then goes back to sleep. I would not say she is lathargic, just a big sleeper. Is this cause for concern? What is the average weight for a newborn pekingese

Answer
Hi Janine. Normal Peke weight at birth is 4-8 ounces. That's just an average. She is quite bigger than her sisters, going by weight. Maybe because she is so big, and is growing well, she doesn't need to nurse as much as the others. I'd wake her up from time to time to get her to nurse. Or at least try to. You don't want her to fall behind the others. If she seems content, and full, then I wouldn't worry too much about her right now. Just keep an eye on her. Make sure she doesn't get cold, or dehydrated.
