Question
Hello, we have a male Rott who is 4 and a female who is 3 she has been in heat 5 times now this is the second time we have tried to breed the two. The male shows no interest in mounting her he just walks around licking her between the legs. We have lifted him up on her and still no excitement. Is there anything we can do? Is it possible to do a home collection and transfer?Thank you!

Answer
Hi Krys. The first thing I would suggest is having the male's thyroid checked. A low thyroid can cause sexual problems. As for doing a home A.I., it is possible as long as you know what you're doing. You can buy kits off of the internet, or maybe even off of your vet. If you've never done it before, I highly suggest letting the vet or other experienced breeder do it, and watch this time. If you're not careful, you can either kill the sperm, or hurt the female inserting the pipette if you don't know exactly what you're doing. If the male's thyroid comes back normal, I'd start to investigate the female. You may have something going on with one of them. Good luck!
