breeding a 9 year old dog

Question
a friend of mine has decided to try and breed his 9 year old chow with a bull mastiff/rottweiler cross (considerably larger than the mother).. this dog has never had puppies before, and i am quite sure has not been to the vet for several years. the dog is starting to show signs of pregnancy.. i am concerned for the well-being of the dog and am wondering if what the chances are that the dog will be able to 'whelp' (is that the word)?

Answer
Hi Neil,

A female considered for breeding should be in prime breeding condition.  Mentally sound, physically fit and vet checked to ensure that she has no health issues.

A young, healthy Chow should have no problem whelping the litter but having a first litter at 9 is going to be a real challenge.

Unfortunately your friend is starting off on the wrong foot. I wonder if consideration was given when doing this breeding, and if they understand what these three breeds of dogs where originally bred for? If you by chance, take a pup, socialization and obedience would be the key to it's rearing.
