I have a Yorkshire Terrier 4 years old Dusty ,he bread with my sisters dog half shitzo and half yorkie on accident . I got one of the puppies female she is 8 months old now , Paris . I think she is in heat she just started bleeding , I keep her  in diapers. I am scared when I go to work or when we are not looking that Dusty will get her . He is her father if it happens will the puppies be alright ? I am doing everything I know for this not to happen. I might have to take Dusty to Grandma's ! Please help me I think she is to young and I'm so scared because he is her Daddy. Thank you so much for your time . Linda Williamson : )

ANSWER: Hi Linda. Inbreeding such as this, can cause problems if you don't know the dogs behind your dogs, and if the dogs to be bred aren't the best quality, mentally and physically. Inbreeding can be a great tool, but you really have to know what you're doing. It can bring the good and the bad out in the puppies. In my opinion, she is way too young to have puppies right now. I would take her to Grandma's if you're not going to be around during the day to keep a good eye on them. It's really hard to keep two dog's seperated while one's in heat. Heat lasts for 21 days, and most breeders will usually try to breed their dogs on days 11 and 13, or on days 12 and 14, so you really want to try to avoid those days. I'm really not sure what else you're asking me :-), so if I can help with anything else, let me know!

Answer
Well, it really depends on the dogs. If I were going to attempt this type of breeding, I would definitely make sure both dogs had all of their health tests done before trying it. When you inbreed, you have to be prepared to cull. Cull doesn't have to mean to kill, just be prepared to spay any dogs affected with any problems. Also, when doing this type of breeding, you have to be really honest with yourself about the dogs....what makes them perfect for inbreeding? Do they have any temperament problems at all? How close are they to their breed standard? and so forth. Dogs used for inbreeding have to be as close to perfect as you can get. This is because you're doubling up on those genes, good and bad. I'm not saying no, you can't do it. I just want to warn you about what can go wrong with inbreeding if you're not prepared, or don't understand what can happen. Do a search on the internet, and read some genetic web sites. Prepare yourself before deciding to do this, so that you'll be prepared. Good luck!
