Question
My birch is 8 days out from her last breeding. There is some white discharge, milky looking. That seems to be normal and o.k., but my concern is that she has a little smell like blood/metallic/newborn-whelping smell. Not foul, not too strong. I noticed because I am paranoid and checking her. Have you ever encountered this type of smell, is it o.k.?

Thanks

Answer
Usually the metallic smells are a change in metals as minerals, etc. & so that would be my first thought. Secondly, I know it's a bit yucky but you have to decide if it's vaginal or rectal in origin. It may be nothing but I'd always err on the side of caution. Watch her actions & particularly water or fluid intake, appetite & I'd even take her temp twice daily as another safeguard. If you've begun to switch her diet to puppy food sometimes the additional iron & other good stuff just makes them emit this odor but worst case scenario a uterine infection. So in my opinion, too wide a variance to risk! You're the best judge of your dog so you'll know best how to handle things. If she shows any excessive water intake, high temp, etc don't delay in seeing your vet. Hope this helps!
