Question

Pudgy belly
We were planning to breed our two weenies during our female's next heat, but they got out in late December and spent a day together while we were at work. She has been gaining weight and getting more defined nipples. She had an X-ray earlier this week but the vet didn't see anything. However the vet thought we were a couple weeks off on the day they got together. Which is possible since we couldn't quite remember which day they escaped. They're both healthy though so we're not too concerned.

My question though has to do with her behavior. Usually she just loves my boyfriend and I'm a substitute lap when he's not home. But now she just wants to be in my lap all the time especially if I have on this one bathrobe. I was wondering if expecting dogs can become overly affectionate? We've had her since she was just a pup and she's never been so snuggly with me before. Not that I mind, but I was wondering if it could be a sign little ones may be on the way.

ps. This is a picture of her current belly bulge. Usually she's only 7.5 to 8 lbs. At her last visit she came in at 10 lbs.

Answer
Hi Jill. If you do an x-ray before day 50 of the pregnancy, you most likely won't see anything. The pups' bones aren't calcified enough to show up on film yet. As for her behavior, prego girls do odd things sometimes, you can blame it on hormones. Sometimes a pregnant female that is usually reseved and not overly affectionate can become needy and wants to be in your face constantly. Sometimes, an overly affecionate girl and become reserved. Good luck, and let me know if I can help with anything else.
