Question
QUESTION: Hello, I have a 5 lbs female Yorkshire Terrier 1 yr 4mos in heat
and she bred (on Accident}with my daughters 9.5lbs maltese/yorkie
mix. I am very worried about her health because of the size difference
and will she be safe? I would like to breed her but not now and not with
a larger dog. I have heard that the shot is not a good thing for my
baby Kiva RIGHT? Do I let her have the pups? Do I have to get her fixed and terminate the pregnancy?
What are some options for me? my kiva tied with my daughter dog on Sept
5th please help!!!!

ANSWER: It's too late for the shot now anyway. The mismate shot that I knew of had to be given 24-48 hours after breeding took place. There's another shot that I wasn't aware of until someone asked me a question here, and told me about it. It's too late for that one also. If you are wanting to breed this female in the future, then spaying is out of the question. Your other option is to allow her to have the puppies. You can also take her in at day 40 of the pregnancy, and have some x-rays done. This will tell you about how many, and if there are any that's too big for her. That way, you'll be prepared if a c-section is needed. Honestly, I'd take her to your vet and see if he has any other options that I may not be aware of. If you don't allow her to get fat during pregnancy, and give her plenty of exercise, then the pups may not get too big. My best advice, talk to your vet. But don't be pushed into something unless you're 100% comfortable with it.

QUESTION: Renee I am very
worried and very upset with myself, All's I did was walk in the house to
plug my phone-in maybe 60 sec. How could I let this happen to my baby
girl. Needless to say I am a nervous wreck. Like I said it happen on
the night of the 5th the next day I called my vet and he said the only
thing to do is have her spayed and terminate the pregnancy he does not do
the shot, so I called all the vets in a 40 mile radius, some said the
same thing and some said let her have the pups but I would have to take
her in for x-rays at 45 days gestation to see how big and how many
along with a possible (most likely) c-section just like you said. Most all of the vets said
the shot is really bad. It makes your dogs whole body contract and is
very painful for her along with vomiting and diarrhea. Then I found two
vets that would gave her the shot one said (have her in before 72 hrs
for a one time shot)But like you said to late for that one and the other said she would have to have a series of
(4-shots)one in the morning and one at night for four days, that one
has to be given within 21-days from the time the dogs tied. Have you
heard of the four day shots? I was going to do it until two of the vets called me back
and I told them that I was considering the shot and do not want to have
her spayed that I was planning on breeding her later with a 3 lbs male,
both vets recommend letting her have the pups, and to take her in for
a ultra-sound at 21 days gestation to make sure she is really pregnant
and x-rays at 45 days gestation to see how many, how big and if any
obvious potential problems she will have and most likely have to have a
c-section. It is obviously to late for the 72 hour shot like you said.
and actually the four day mismate shot scares me to death on the other
hand her having the pups scares me to death too, My question is do you think being her size that she is physically,
emotionally and mentally mature enough to handle the stress and will she die on me?
I love her too much for that. This is all so overwhelming All's I can
do is cry. I took both of the dogs weight on a U.S.P.S machine
that I have, it should be accurate she is 5.4oz he is 9.3 to 9.5oz (he
would not set still for me) give or take an oz. What do you think I should do?
If it comes to not breeding her later and having her spayed and
terminating the pregnancy then so be it. I don't want to do that BUT I don't
want to lose her either. The doctors said she can do this with help. I am not in to making lots of money from my dog. When and if I do bred her with a small Yorkie I was planning on keeping them and then getting her spayed along with the others. Have you heard of dogs her size dieing giving puppy-birth? or not making it through the anesthesia because she is so small? This is such a hard decision. I don't mean to bug you so much I am just trying to get as much information as I can so I can make the right decision. Thanks for listening to all my concerns and I will take all you say into consideration.Thank you

Answer
I've never heard of the 4 day shot before. I have no idea how that one works, to be honest. Well, I'd be concerned about her age. I'm aware though, that people with small breeds may breed their dogs at 1 1/2 years of age. I'm personally use to the larger dogs. It's honestly untelling what the outcome will be, no matter what you decide. Everytime you breed a female, you run the risk of loosing her. Even if she is fully grown, and very healthy. Sadly, sometimes these things happen. She may give birth to this litter just fine, but something may go wrong the next. Not saying it will, just that it can. That's something as a breeder that you have to be prepared for, that something may happen to the mom even with the best of circumstances. It's a sad reality. I wish I could tell you that everything will go smoothly, that mom and pups will make it just fine. She has a few things going against her, her age and size. However, there's been plenty of dogs before her that small and whelped no problem. I really just don't know what to tell you to do here. I don't want to talk you into something that may turn out bad. I don't want anything to happen to her either. The only 100% way to prevent this, is to have her spayed. If she is truly that valuable of a breeding animal, or you truly want for her to have puppies in the future, then the only thing you can do is to let her have this litter. I know that you're in a bad situation here. Either way, you loose. You have her fixed, you'll never have any pups from her. You let her have the pups, something may happen (or not). And it's not just the size thing. Very large dogs have died giving birth. And you also have to remember that the teacup dogs DO give birth all the time, and make it through just fine. As for making it through the anesthesia, check with you vet to see if your breed has a bad time with it or not. My breed, the Boxer, is very susceptible to it. You have to be super careful with them. I know this is super long, and if you've noticed, I haven't exactly said what I think you should do. The reason is simple. It's not my dog. I really don't want to tell you 'yes, do this', because I'd hate for something bad to happen. And yes, I'd feel really guilty about that. I think that you should take all of the information that you got from all of the vets, and sit down to make a list. The pros and cons of each option. Then, you can figure out which is the lesser evil, and what you're most comfortable with. I would be happy to help you with this. I mean, if you want to breed her in the future, you still face the possibility of loosing the mom. Not saying that it WILL happen, just that it COULD happen. You have to be prepared for that possibility. It's a sad fact in breeding dogs. I would be more than happy to help you figure out what to do, to supply you with information so that you can make an informed decision. But I can't TELL you what to do. I can search around, ask some breeders that I know, and see what they might say. Like I said, I'd love to help. And I know how concerned you are. You want to do the right thing. Let me talk to a few people, Yorkie breeders as a matter of fact, and I'll get back to you in the morning. Just sit tight, and we'll come up with something, ok? And you're not bugging me at all. That's what I'm here for! If you have anymore concerns before I get back to you, feel free to post them. :-)-----------------------------------------------------------
Ok, I'm back. I talked to a good friend on mine who happens to breed Yorkies. Her honest opinion, if you want to use the female for future breeding, let her have the litter. Just be prepared. Don't let her get fat, and get plenty of exercise. And she also advises that you get the x-rays done to see what you're looking at. She said in her opinion, don't mess with the shots now. It's too late. She too had never heard of the 4 day shot you talked about. Although she has used the mismate shot with no problems. (The one given 24-48 hours after breeding) She said to either have her spayed, or let her have the litter. She feels that these are your best options. But again, it's just her opinion. She told me that she has a 4 1/2 pound Yorkie that gave birth with no problem that had been bred to a larger male, I think she said he weighed in at about 6-7 pounds. Again, it all comes down to this: it's really your decision. What you feel is the best for your dog, and what you're most comfortable with. I do have to stress that with any breeding, you have to be prepared for the loss of either mom or pups, or both. It's the chance you take when you breed. I had hoped to come up with a better solution for you, but sadly, we're kind of back to square one here. If I can help you in any way, feel free to contact me. Even if it's just to map out a pros/cons list, or whatever.
