Question
hi, i want to breed my female 2 and a half year old king charles cav, she is pedigree with papers, and i had a stud dog who has champ bloodlines flown up to me (at a large fee!) I first noticed her bleeding 8 days ago, and when the male arrived today he mounted her and they successfully "got stuck" for about 15 mins. do you think she would be at the ready time of her cyle, or should i keep the male with her for another week, just in case? Will he keep trying? Will this be harmful to her?
Cheers, Melissa

Answer
Well, every girl is different. Some girls ovulate early into their cycles, some mid way, and some late. It honestly depends on the dog and what's normal for her. I would keep the boy for a while longer. There's no reason to try everyday, that's too much on both of them. You can keep them separated, and try every other day. Say they bred today, wait until Friday (day 10), breed again on Sunday (day 12). Normally, I only suggest two breedings, but since your girl stood on day 8, I would suggest to try a breeding on day 12 (Sunday) just in case your girl is one of those girls who will stand through the whole thing. You said you noticed her bleeding 8 days ago. That could mean that she was actually in heat earlier, you just didn't notice. If that's the case, then she may be at the perfect time in her cycle. I would still suggest to you to try two more breedings on days stated above, just to be on the safe side. If she refuses to stand, or gets snappy with the male, then I wouldn't try to breed her anymore. Good luck!:-)
