Question
Hi my Bichon is 4 and a half week pregnant this is her second litter, last evening I noticed that she has a small amount of creamy discharge from the vulva and has a little shivering at times, is this normal as I cannot remember seeing this on her last pregnancy although she did have to have emergency calcium when she delivered the puppies at 59 days. It has been 18 months since her last litter and this her last please I am a little worried, is this a normal thing. She's eating fine well really and is filling out already she's actually getting quite big which does surprise me at only 4 and half weeks, Please advice

Answer
Hi Michelle.  Shivering, panting, restlessness, increased respiratory rate and high fervor, can all be symptoms of  Hypocalcemia (dangerously low calcium levels).  Although hypocalcemia usually occurs after giving birth, clinical signs can appear before or during the act of giving birth.

Hypocalcemia can be live threatening and I suggest that you contact your veterinarian immediately.

Good luck, and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have additional questions.

Sincerely,
Penny DiLoreto
