Question
Hello Cindy. Let me apologize in advance because this is a little long.

I will be adopting a 3.5 year old Chinese Crested this week and have been reading all that I can about them.  This dog "Rambo" is actually a rescue.  The breeder that has him is fostering for another breeder friend that has cancer.  So, Rambo has lived at this other breeder's home (in an attached climate controlled building with 14 Dauschunds and 6 Papillons) for several months.  He has had to pretty much isolate Rambo because he has had females in and out of heat, as well as puppies.

Rambo was a breeder, so has not been neutered, and though he says he is "partially potty trained", I am wondering what this may really mean.  I have never had a small dog, so I don't quite know what to expect... or how often.

Currently, I have two other rescues, a 9 yr. old Doberman and a 12 yr. Greyhound.  We have a large doggie door with a fenced in yard, so I am wondering how quickly my newest addition will follow the other dogs outside when nature calls.  Recently, I kept a friend's Dauschund for a week, and she learned almost immediately, but she is very well behaved anyway!  I also have two cats that use the doggie door (tried to discourage it, but they laugh at me as they slide in and out now.)

Should I maybe fence Rambo in the kitchen until he learns or should I crate him and bring him to our room at night?  I am here 24/7 and work from home but I am wondering how long a big adjustment like this might take for a dog his age. I am hesitant about bringing him to our bedroom because my Siamese is totally in control of the bed at night.  So the Siamese is actually the "alpha" here in this house. That worries me a little, but I know dogs have to learn.

OK - next - I have a boat and I am really looking forward to taking Rambo on our frequent outings to the Outer Banks of NC and maybe even venture to SC and GA this year if all goes well!  Since I am planning on taking him on the boat regularly, should I then keep those puppy pee pads on the floor in the kitchen at home to work on training him to use those or would that be counterproductive?  I am thinking that if he learns to use those at the house, whenever we aren't near land, it may be easier for him to use them on the back deck of the boat. But, I have seen people with sod in a cat litter box on their boats and their dogs seem to adjust quite easily. It's a big boat (bedrooms, bathrooms, etc.) so Rambo won't be exposed to too much sun.

If you had to guess, how long will it take him to adjust to his new family and life?  I read they have problems relocating, but I know Rambo will indeed be much happier as part of our family because he will have his humans virtually all the time.

Sorry so long.  Please feel free to answer me at www.aeroangie@aol.com if you think these questions are better suited for private conversation.  I may have a lot more questions very soon if that's OK.

I'm having a new baby, so I'm feeling kinda anxious!  Thanks in advance!

Answer
Hello Angie - I know you addressed this to Cindy but since I had a few minutes I looked in the "question pool" area of this site & saw your post. I think Cindy may be at maximum capacity or similar scenario which may explain your request being in the pool - regardless, I read your situation & would be happy to try to help if you'd like an opinion. I'm not extremely familiar with the breed but I can at least lend my thoughts if you'd like.
