Question
I have had my female since she was 10 months old, and she is now 18 months old and I just noticed she does not have any front dew claws, is this possible natural or did her previous owner have them removed?

Answer
Hi Vicki.  Many breeders have the dew claws removed, for the dogs protection.  Normally this is done when the puppy is 3 - 5 days old - any later than that, it requires surgery.

Dew claws are used by wild dogs to help hold down pray.  Domesticated dogs really do not have a need for them, and if not removed, they can get caught on bed covers, rugs, etc, and it is possible for them to rip.

Some people feel that dew claw removal is unnecessary and are not in favor of removal.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have additional questions.
