How much time can pass between the birth of each pup?  She had the first pup at appx 6:30am and had her 7th at appx 9am. She had 5 fairly quickly.  I felt her belly & knew she still had at least 1 more.  It took 2 hours before she gave birth to 2 more pups and I suspect there may be 1 more. A side question: Is the placenta different from the "afterbirth"?

Hi. Hopefully, she's had all of her puppies by now. A dog can safely go about 3 hours inbetween pups as long as she doesn't show any signs of distress. Anything after 3 hours, I would call the vet. I would take her to the vet and ask for a shot of oxytocin. This will make sure that there was nothing left in there, puppy or placenta. if left in there, it can lead to a serious infection and even death. The afterbirth is the same thing as a placenta.
