Question
I have bred my rottweiler on May 9th. They tied for about 20-30 minutes. So, I counted the days. Saturday she would be 45 days from the tie. I took her in to the vet for x-rays to see if she is truly pregnant and if so, how many. She has all the pregnancy signs, weight gain, more clingy to me, nipples are bigger and pink, some discharge from vulva, vulva stays swollen, more so than when just coming out of heat. The x-rays showed no skeletons, spines or skulls. Could it be possible that she conceived later than the day of tie? What is the exact day that I can bring her in for an x-ray to see if the other one was just too soon? If she is having a false pregnancy, how long will it last? Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Sandi -- pups don't calcify until 45 or later and can't be visible on x-rays until then.  An egg can takes 7 days to mature and sperm can live for days too. All this means, is wait another week and repeat the x-rays.

False pregnancy can last 65 days plus. Her due date will come and go and nothing will come of it.  She may be depressed for a few days after ... but once the hormones clear her body, she'll be back to normal.

Either way, good luck.
