Question
QUESTION: Hello,I have a few concerns..We bred my mini dachshund(3.5 yrs of age) for the first time on AUG 10th.She should  be 70 days today(10-19-07) from that first tie,but we also bred her two other times(one 3 days later-other 5 days later)She has lost her mucus plug -last week-  and has had her temp go up and down for the past week. Our vet is not really concerned because of the multiple ties and because she has NOT had major contractions and pain/straining,but is this normal? We have her scheduled for a check this afternoon, but I DO NOT WANT to do a C-SEC!I am experienced with breeding and whelping, but never had a dog go this far.
She has clear gel like discharge, but nothing else is happening besides her being uncomfortable. The puppies are still moving and in the last 3 days puppies were squirming and all of a sudden yesterday and today she is "lumping up"......?(little kicks here and there)Does everything sound normal? My vet also told us since we had to hold her still for the deed, she might not have ovulated yet..Does it sound like I should be concerned-I am really thinking that she did conceive later because it took her a long to show almost 6 weeks..Also,she has been grooming all day yesterday and all day today(especially between her toes.LOL)..We have been walking to keep her health up-should I walk her a little longer?

ANSWER: Hi Chris:

Undoubtedly by now you've already seen the vet & gotten advice so I don't know if my response was timely enough to be of any real help. It sounds as if she's due literally any hour. As long as you don't see signs of actual labor (straining, etc) nature will probably just decide when the time is right. Everything you've described sounds perfectly normal. Let me know if the vet had any additional concerns.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Hi,no concerns here just that they haven't come out-After reading somethings and first hand accounts we decided to just wait it out(very possible she is in the early 60's)Is there anything else we can do to maybe help her along?

Answer
Hi Chris:

No, it sounds as if you're doing everything correctly. I would continue with some brief walks, never leave her unattended for any length of time & watch for the water breaking. There's a saying among breeders that "a watched bitch never whelps!" & this is SO true! I'm sure she's just a short ways off from whelping & once you begin to see the signs such as refusing food, shivering, panting, etc. I imagine things will progress quickly. Did you have an Xray taken to know how many puppies to expect? If not, I would recommend at least taking her into the vet the day after she whelps to have an oxytocin injection in case anything is retained in her uterus. I'll be hoping for the best!
