Question
Hi,
I have a cavalier stud dog , which is supposed to be mating with a maiden bitch who is 3 yrs old. Her season has been strange according to her owner in the fact that she hasn't swelled as much as she usually does and in the fact that she has not had a bloody discharge. She won't stand and is very aggressive to my stud so yesterday I held her and I got the first tie for about 10mins but today when I tried he won't even mount her to try a tie this situation is beyond me understanding. I need some ideas on how I could get another tie as I don't want to have to give back the stud fee.

Answer
HI Teressa. It sounds like something is going on with the female dog, especially if she's not bleeding and is agressive. She may be experiencing a split heat, that may explain the lack of swelling and bleeding. I wouldn't force another breeding. If you do and the female continues to act this way towards your male, it can ruin his stud career. I'd suggest to the bitch owner taking her in for a quick check up before anymore breeding is done. It doesn't sound like a normal heat cycle to me. You may lose this stud fee, but if it were me, I'd tell the owner to take her to the vet to have her checked, and give the fee back if I had to before I forced this female dog to be bred, and maybe even ruining my stud dog because of it. Think about it, the stud fee isn't worth it. :-)
