Tail docking on Yorkies

Question
I have 4 1 day old Yorkie puppies. What is the best way to dock your puppies tails yourself and how long should they be cut?

Answer
Hi Misty

I recommend banding as oppose to cutting.  When you dock a tail by cutting, you have a chance of the spine recoiling into the neck causing structural damage. You also require a steady hand and the ability to stitch.

What I do is take a rubber band and cut it in half.  Place it on the pups tail (have someone hold the pup for you so you can use 2 hands).  Tie the band tight at about 1/4 inch.  The tail grows but the band restricts blood flow and the tail simply dies and falls off.  No pain and no fuss.  It usually take 3 - 5 days.

Good luck.
