Question
QUESTION: I have a 1.5 year old maltese and she is about to deliver her first litter on august 25th. She is going to be 8 weeks pregnant in two days. This morning I woke up and her whole private area was covered by a kinda green covering type stuff. Is this normal? If not what does it mean and is there anything that I could do about it at home?

ANSWER: First of all, please forgive me for the delay in getting back to you. I had a family emergency, my 17 year old sister was bucked off of her horse, and we were sitting in the emergency room forever. Ok, the green discharge is NOT normal before the first puppy is born. It could mean a few things. Either a puppy died, there's an infection, or maybe a pups' placenta can loose from the uterine wall. I would take her to the vet ASAP. Puppies can live if born on the 58th day. If you're counting 63 days, and the 25th is day 63, then she could safely deliver today or tomorrow. It depends on when she really took, but for the safety of mom and the other pups, she needs to get to the vet fast.

QUESTION: well thanks for the answer. but i was wrong there was nothing wrong with the dog.lol
no worries about the write back delay.
but i have been taking her temperature lately and it is at 98.8 this morning. can you estamate about how soon she will be havin the pups??
ANSWER: lol Those girls will drive you nuts during pregnancy! I think they just like to keep us jumping. You know, I've never been too big on the temp thing. I always went by when they lost their mucus plug, and such. Their temps can go up and down for days. When it drops really low is when labor should start soon. I believe 95-96 degrees. Good luck, and if I can be of anymore help, let me know!

QUESTION: well i heard that when it gets down to 98.2 is when she is in labor...and i think she lost her mucus plug like a week ago.
sorry for all questions but im a first timer lol

Answer
I just talked to a friend of mine who religiously takes temps. The temp should drop to about 96. Are you positive it was the mucus plug? They can sometimes get a this clearish discharge. People often mistake that for the mucus plug if they've never really seen it before. The first time I saw my female loose her mucus plug, I thought something was wrong. lol Nobody warned me about it. The mucus plug will be thick, gunky, and stringy. They should only loose that about 24-48 hours before labor as the plug protects the inside of the uterus from infection and such. Hey, that's what we're here for! If you need anymore help, feel free to holler!
