Question
Hi, I have two female Paps that are 5 yrs old. I rescued them from a BYB, they were supposed to be bred already--they were not--so my dogs did the job!! lol..My question is one of them, her teats are very dry and cracked and large. They were that way when she arrived here. She may have one or two that are normal, I put some Vaseline on them to try to help, it did a little. Do you have any other things I could do? Also, since they arrived at my house, I have a female Poodle who came into heat the week after they got here. My plan was to let the Paps have the pups from where they came from (that didn't happen) and then place them in good homes. When my Poodle came into heat terrific fights broke out almost every day. All three dogs were bred here with my males...but do you think the stress of the fighting could make them abort the pups? They were all bred with in the weeks of Dec. 30 - Jan. 9...this is my first time at breeding dogs and have no idea what could happen with these dogs. Am I going to have pups or not? And what should I do about the one with the bad teats, they look terrible. Thank you so much for your time, Linda

Answer
Hi Linda.  There is a product called "Bag Balm" that you can purchase at most drug stores.  This product was originally created to treat dry, sore, and cracked cow utters.  However, it is also good for human hands, wind burn, etc.  The product come is a green square shaped can and has a picture of cow utters under the name "Bag Balm".

You wrote in your question, "Am I going to have puppies or not?" I'm sorry, but I can not answer this question, however I want to point out that it is dangerous for you, your dogs, and the unborn puppies to continue to have these aggressive females together.  If you do not have the space, to keep them separated, then I'm afraid that someone is going to get seriously hurt.  The evaluated hormones in both  male and female dogs, during the heat cycle, and pregnancy, can cause even normally docile dogs to fight.  In your case, because you "rescued" the two dogs, you do not know their temperment.  I can only assume that these dogs are normally aggressive towards other females, and pregnancy will only make it worse.

You also mentioned that this is your first time breeding.  I'm going to suggest that as a novice, you have probably bitten off more than you can chew at this point.  It is better to start with one dog (the female) and gradually add other dogs.  Having three dogs that are expecting litters so close together is a challenge even for the most experienced breeders.

Please read answers I have given to others, here at this website.  I think you will gain some valuable information, and possibly get answer to other question you might have.

Good luck, and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have additional questions.

Sincerely,
