Chihuachua giving birth

Question
Our little Chihuahua is ready to whelp. She has had milk for two or three days. She discharged a clear thick sticky mucus last night and now she is discharging a clear sticky fluid. Is this event getting ready to come to a climax? Do Chihuahuas' have special birthing issues? I feel stupid for not figuring this out earlier.

Answer
Hi Cheryl

You should check with your local Chihuahua's breeder or club to see if the breed has specific whelping issues.

What she should have is a whelping box filled with newspaper or old sheets & towels where she can nest and safely whelp her pups.

She will quit eating and become more restless closer to her time. The sticky mucus is the plug things should be starting within 24 - 36 hours.

Good luck
