Question
Okay, heres my delemma, My uncle's dashchund is currently pregnant and on her 40th day. So far we have gotten her a whelping box and are keeping her close to it. This is the going to be Victoria's first pregnancy and I have gathered almost all the information I could out of the internet. My only problem is that when the puppies are being born the details we should know when cleaning them up, like if they have meucus plugs in their nostrils and what would be reccomended to clean it out. Aside from this information which I could not find much detail on we are prepaired for her puppies to come in the next 2 weeks! (The puppies were concieved in May 11th-12th)

Answer
Hi Katrina

Mother Nature may or may not kick in.  But if you need to assist, bring the pup to the mother and let her eat off the sac.  Using a clean towel or rag, you can vigorously rub the pup and make sure everything is clear of their mouth and nose, (a little gasp is always a good sound).

There is no need to panic and start CPR or prep the makeshift ER on your kitchen table.  Relax, keep the dam came and the babies clean.  It should be noted that not all pups are born in a sac, some come out "dry".

Good luck
