Question
Reina is 5 years and spayed. Malibu is 3 1/2 years due any day now. I am concerned with what place Reina should play or not with the puppies. Reina is high strung and Malibu is very laid back normally. Is it normal for Malibu not to let her by them or should I prevent Reina from even trying to get near them?
Malibu had a previous litter before she lived with us but their was no other dog around. They get along great normally so I am hoping the puppies do not change their relationship. Is there something I can do or not do to keep everything smooth?

Answer
Hi Kelly. My best advice would be to separate them when the mom-to-be starts labor. Most new moms don't want any other dogs around their pups, especially newborns. It can get aggressive, and really nasty, really fast. The safest thing to do for now, would be to keep them apart. Especially for the new mom's state of mind. Some dogs will get really nervous with other dogs around. She may try to move the pups, sit on them, or may even quit taking care of them. It doesn't matter that they're normally the best of pals, not when it comes to puppies. Keeping them apart will not hurt them, or their relationship. When the pups get a bit older, say 4 weeks old, then you can try to introduce them to the other dog. Good luck, and if I can help with anything else, let me know!
