Question
I have a 4 yr.old male dobie, and a 2 yr.old f dobie. They have both never bred before. My male and her will not breed. He will sniff her,and try to jump on her a little bit,but thats it.The female does not get aroused by him also. The male is very dominant, and has bossed her around, being she is scared of him.I also have an older female.fixed german sheperd, and he is always bothering her.Is this problem with breeding due to the dominance part of the male toward the female?Im lost here with the breeding situation.Any info would greatly be appreciated.Thank you

Answer
Hi Amanda,

Your female may not be ready to breed. Dog's breed for procreation, not recreation, so it's futile to believe that he doesn't arouse her.  She has to be ready physically by releasing her eggs before she will stand for a male.  And your male may just be "testing the waters" but not quite interested until she releases her eggs. Some males know instinctively when the time is right.

You have to have her swabbed or a progesterone test to see where she's at or wait for the male to "let you know".  If he's a dominant, when it's time, he'll be ready.

You can also separate them for a few days and then bring them back together.

Good luck.
