Question
I have an 8 yr old pembrooke male Corgi.  Beautiful, healthy, well behaved little dog.  I have been told that he should weigh no more than 24 lbs.  I put him on a strict diet and he goes to 28 and no less.   When I put his food in front of him, he is salivating like crazy.  He is hungry all the time.   I feed 3/4 Purina healthy weight-a T. of non fat yogurt-1/2 cup fresh carrots and 1/4 cup of fresh apples.   If I am not careful, his weight will go to 33 lbs.  I am disabled and do not walk him but he has a nice yard and a doggie door to go out at any time.
My question is:  Should all Corgis weigh 24 lbs?  Am I on the right track?

Answer
Hi Connie

You know dogs are like people, some are little "fluffier" than others.  My mom has a pug that is 42 lbs.  Excellent shape, she can run the agility course under 2 minutes....she's just a big boned girl.

To say that your Corgi should be 24 lbs is probably nonsense.  Is he healthy and happy? That's the most important thing, if he sits at 28 lbs, then the few extra pounds should be considered love handles.

On a side note, how does his coat look?  I would try him on a fish based diet.  Dogs seem to slim down and look amazing on the Timberwolf Ocean Blue or those types of food.
