Question
Hi I had a question about cropping tails and removing dew claws. I just recently started breeding my rat terrier I usually breed bigger breeds like labs or goldens so I never have had to worry about cropping their tails. So i just need some info about it. First of all is it safe to do it at home. I know a lot of breeders that do it their self. And if it can be done at home how soon does it have to be done and is their a certain technique. I talked to my vet and they said that they would so the dew claws but not the tails. And also what's the reason for the dew claws being removed? And any other info you have on this would be appreciated. thanks

Answer
Hi Whitney. I personally do not dock or do dew claws at home. I always take them to the vet for that. I've been breeding Boxers for a long time, but never worked the courage up to do it myself. I'm always afraid that I'll mess the tail up, or hurt the pup. You can ask one of the other experts about that, they may be able to help you better with that. Call around to other vets about the tails. There are many vets out there that'll do the tails. I would find one that does tails and dew claws, and just take the pups to that vet. Make sure you find a vet that's really good at it though if you decide to take the pups to a vet. The dew claws are basically an extra toe that dogs no longer need. They rip easily. It's best to have them taken off when the dog is young.
