Question
This is the 2nd time we have tried mating my female mini schnauzer. She is 2 1/2 and he is 6. The last time was the first for both. She was more then willing and he was as well .... but maybe too excited to get the job done. He is a little shorter then  her as well. So this time he was way excited and she was willing but he never penetrated her and he swelled outside and then lets just say... let loose. Is there anything we can do?? She is going back today to visit him.

Answer
Well, first things first, I'll assume that both of your dogs are of correct type, temperament and have earned hip scores and had genetic testing, and that you've chosen them to mate because of their compatibility of body and temperament.

That said, if she's ovulated, which you will only know by doing progesterone testing, I would breed the two of them by artificial insemination.

A qualified veterinarian or established breeder can help you with this. AI's are done most often to protect the health and virility of the stud dog and brood bitch, as diseases can be passed during copulation that can cause sterility.

Otherwise, you can help, get your hands in there. A lot of people assume it can get done on its own. When in reality, it doesn't work that way. They may not be compatible, for size alone.
