Question
We have a Weimaranier that is heat right now.  She started to bleed on 3/18/07.  From what we are being told, you count 10 days in, then add two, check her blood color and if it is a watermelonish color she is ready.  Other advise was a 10, 13, 14 days breed.  What is your recommendations.

Answer
Hi Ardella

If you are going to do the counting, both are good.  The reason you add 2 days is because you may have not noticed the onset of her heat.    Breeding spaced apart allows time for her eggs to mature.

If you are planning on breeding her to a experienced stud, he will be able to tell you when she's ready to go.

What I would recommend and to take the guess work out, is take her to your vet (or a fellow breeder equipped) to perform a progesterone and/or ovulation test.  Simple blood work that can narrow in on the time of ovulation.

Good luck!
