How often can you use a stud

Question
I have a male yorkie I breed and recently have gotten a lot of other calls from breeders wanting to use my male.  I had another breeder mention that males like females need to rest and he shouldn't be breed very often or he will be worn out and not produce. Is this true?

Answer
Males generate sperm on a regular, consistent basis; however, I wouldn't breed him more frequently than every other day per dog (the norm is three matings) and I'd limit his sessions to no more frequently than twice monthly. This will allow enough time for him to regenerate quality sperm. If he's mating too frequently he may produce lower quality sperm which may result in birth defects and/or negative pregnancies.
