Dew Claws

Question
Hi,
My Golden had her first litter last night. She had thirteen. I had planned to do the dew claws myself. However, now that the time is near, I'm wondering if this something a DVM should do? I tried to do a little research today and most of what I can find is regarding the humanity of it. To Dew Claw or not to due claw. Of course my DVM wants to do it but I was hoping for an unbiased opinion. Thanks for your help. Colleen

Answer
Hi. If you've never done dew claws yourself, i would let the vet do it. If you're wanting to do them in the future, you can ask your vet if he will let you watch. My breed is Boxer, so I Have them removed. I now have Mastiffs, and in that breed, they aren't done, so it's odd to me not to do them. It really is a personal decision to make. It is quick, and they heal very fast from it, and it can save them in the future from ripping it off. If your vet is good at doing it, then I would do it. It's usually done at 3 days of age. Good luck!
