HELP Mastitis

Hello Renee;

I'm at my wits end.  My Lab (62 lbs.) has 10 pups and has mastitis (on one breast).  The doc gave her 250mg of amoxicillin two times a day.  I'm trying to hand feed these 10 babies and am having an awful time!  The doc said he's heard of people letting pups nurse when mom is on amoxicillin.  What should I do?  The dose is so high!

Hi Kat. The only real serious problem that you may encounter with this is the pups getting diarrhea. Some people also believe that if the pups are allowed to nurse on mom while taking antibiotics, the pups may become immune to them if needed in the future. If the mastitis is not too bad, then I personally would let the pups nurse. Just keep a close eye on their poop, and at the first sign of diarrhea, get them to the vet.
