Question
Hi, i was just wondering if you could confirm or otherwise somethings i have read on the net re Breeding bassets - I have 2 bassets myself - male and female - female only 7 months and i suspect she is just coming into season just now; I do not wish her to have puppies  now or for the foreseeable and went to the vet today to see if she could get an injection to stop her season coming on - however he feels it is too late on this occassion and advised to separate them. I have however read that on most occasions Bassets need a helping hand in this are and will not be naturally able to do so themselves - is this correct ?

Any info most appreciated

Answer
Hello

Dogs will surprise you with what they can and can not accomplish and if a female is prime for breeding, chances are a male can get the job done.  Bassets as a breed, generally do need assistance however, that being said, there is a large number that are free breeders.

On a site note, it should be cautioned that the injection can also make it extremely difficult to conceive in the future. The only way to ensure no puppies is to spay or neuter.

Good luck
