Reabsorbing pregnancy

Question
Hi Joyce, I spoke to you a couple of weeks ago about my pregnant shih-tzu. I took honey to the vets because there were still no signs of whelping after 66days. They did an ultrasound and confirmed that there was no longer a pregnancy, they said more than likely she re-absorbed the pregnancy. I was so sad although the pregnancy wasn't planned I had got used to the idea and had everything she needed ready for the big adventure! Anyway all I wanted to know was when she was taken for an ultrasound at 6wks the vet said they could see at least 1 pup, but then she kept telling us that its not uncommon for pregnancy to be re-absorbed. Do you think they spotted something wrong with the pup and knew it would possibly end this way? Since finding out there is no pregnancy Honey is showing all the signs of a season why would this be if her last one was July? I'm not going to mate her this season as I want her to recover, although she isn't showing any ab-normal signs atall. I was just wondering if you think she could still go on to have a normal pregnancy next year and is there anything we could do to improve the chances of a healthy litter? She is on the absolute best food and is a very healthy, lively dog.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Answer
Hi Samantha

I can't speak for your vet, but it does happen.  I wouldn't classified as a common occurrence but it is known to happen.

There is no reason to believe that she can't have a normal pregnancy, but I would talk to your vet about placing her on a low dosage of amoxicillian to ensure she's healthy.

Oils, and vitamins combined with a good kibble is a great start to making her transition to pregnancy easier.

Good luck
