Pregnanty and Ultrasound

Question
We bred our 98 lb cane corso in April, about 28 days later we took her to the vet for an ultrasound. It showed nothing. she would now be about 42 days, given we may have calculated about 3 days off, and she is starting to show..a little..she has since breeding been a totally differnt dog, sucky, loving, easily distracted and protective and eating like a horse. She insists on bathing all day and having our rotty bather her from head to toe. Her vulva is still puffy as well. Could it be we went too soon for the ultraound. or could the ultrasound have been wrong? Her ribs are now huge and her stomach seems to be harder but she does not look like she will deliver in 3 weeks.  Are we wrong of mught the ultrasound have been wrong? Thanks so much.

Answer
Hi. I personally don't care for ultrasounds. I know they can be a great tool to use on a dog that is known to have reproductive problems, or even one that reabsorbs her pups. I prefer the x-ray. What I suggest doing is to wait until she is at least 50 days pregnant, wait a few extra if you think you may be off a few days, and have an x-ray done. This way, they can't hide and you'll know for sure what to expect. I have known a lot of people that used the ultrasound and it said the dog was not pregnant, only for the dog to whelp a litter. So, that's what I would do, get an x-ray done when the time is right. Good luck!
