Question
Hello Ms. Cox,

We have a new beagle at home and he has been adjusting very well. He sleeps, eats, and plays just fine and has shown no sign of illness. Last night, however, my mom and I noticed a change in his temperment. He was crying more and seemed very uncomfortable. He had his BM a lot more frequent that usual (He usually goes poo every couple of hours but last night it was every 10-15 Min.) My mom got up early to take him outside and noticed a little bit of blood on the edges of his poo. We will take him to the vet if this continues but we were wondering if this should be a reason to worry. We noticed yesterday that He was chewing on a wood panel on the floor and thought perhaps this is what caused the blood. I put hot sauce on the wood to deter him from eating more (he was quite fond of lemon) Could the hotsauce have caused this?

I thank you in advance for yout answer! ^__^

Answer
Hi Cece! Is he starting to vomit, or not eating/drinking? If so, I would have him checked for coccidia. It's relatvely easy to take care of, a lot of puppies are born with it now days. I'd still take him in even if he's not doing any of the above. The wood he's been chewing on may have splintered inside of him, or even made a small tear. The thing is, with small puppies, it can be a million different things, and the vet is the best one to figure out what is wrong with him. I hope he's doing better, and please let me know how it turns out. :-)
