Question
Hi I wanted to know I it would be safe to breed my pomeranians my little female is 4.5 lbs and my male is 5.5lbs I wanted to know if that's safe to breed them even though he is one pound bigger than her please get back to me with your expert advice when you can THANKS

Answer
Hi Daniel:

It may be perfectly safe to breed the two but more importantly than the difference in their size is their lineage, for example, do either of their bloodlines include a tendency for over-sized puppies? It would be best to research this as best you can & then consult with your veterinarian, have him conduct some pre-breeding screening tests & get his opinion as to how safe it would be. If your female has adequate uterine size & her vaginal/birth canal area appear to be of normal size then I doubt there would be a problem. Usually if the difference in size is not overwhelming & all tests appear optimal things should be OK; however, even in the best of matches occasions to occur when a C-section is necessary so there's no such thing as a 100% degree of certainty with any breeding.

Personally I have one stud who is 18 lbs & a female who is only 10 lbs yet the two have bred successfully without any problem several times & have produced perfect puppies each breeding with no complications, so it IS possible; however, all dogs are different & I am in no way saying that because it's been safe for mine it will be the case for you.

I'm including a link on pre-breeding testing for your review so you can better know what to expect.
