breeding poodles

Question
Hi,

I have a male miniature poodle.  He is on the small side of miniature poodles.  He was sold to us as a toy poodle, but obviously fits miniature poodle measurements.  He stands about 12 inches (highest point at shoulder) and he weighs 12.6 lbs.  I want to breed him, but mistakenly had listed him as a toy poodle which according to AKC guidelines stand 10 inches or shorter.  We have someone interested in breeding with our dog.  She has a toy poodle and she is unsure of her weight (she said 7-10 lbs).  I had guessed my own dog's weight at 10-11 lbs when I originally posted his stats.

Would it be safe for toy poodle to breed with our miniature male?  Will the pups be too big for her to deliver?  Or may they be close enough in size where it would be okay?  At what height difference between the dogs would it be worrisome to breed them?

Thanks,

Michelle

Answer
Hi Michelle

It's important when doing an out-cross to know what is behind each dogs, to at least 3 or 4 generations.

You may get one or two larger pups but it's common in most breeds for the male to be larger than the female.  I don't see a problem with the stats of the two you are considering.

Good luck
