Question
I was wondering what the outcome of Chris' dachsy was, did she deliver?
I have a 2 year old female that is on her 61st day, and is very clingy to me, she gets very upset if I leave her and wants me to hold her all the time.  It is her first litter.  I took her to our vet when she was half way along and he just told me to bring her back when the pups come.  I took her temp yesterday and it was 99.  She doesn't appear to be laboring though.  Her teats are milking.  The pups are rolling and thumping all around. I think there is 3 or 4 of them by palpation.  She just acts likes she is miserable, but she hasn't lost her appetite. Is there something I can do to help her along?

Answer
Hi Laura:

I haven't received an update from Chris so I don't know whether or not his dachshund has whelped yet or not.
As for your girl -- I would recommend taking her temp at least twice daily to try to find the drop (if it occurs) which can be an indication of impending labor. I'm sure she does look miserable & totally know that look! All you can do is be as comforting to her as possible & be sure she's getting plenty to eat -- several smaller meals are best. Otherwise all you can do is wait -- nature will take its course & if you haven't already done so, get all your supplies & such ready for whelping. Also be sure to watch the clock once labor actually begins so that you'll be aware if too much time passes either before the arrival of the first puppy after her water breaks or in between puppies. All vets seem to differ somewhat as to how long to wait before seeking medical assistance so you might check with yours -- I usually give it no more than 2 hours. Please let me know if you have any additional concerns.
