Question
I have a half chihuahua and half Yorkie(chorkie)she is 3.4lb and is 2 1/2 years old she is also no bigger than a size of a chihuahua.I am scared for her because she is a very small dog and she was breeded by a full blooded Yorkie and he weighs 3.4lb as well but the thing is i think she is too small.I am now having second thoughts and regretting her pregnancy because we don't wont to lose the dog that is more than a dog or friend but part of the family and don't want anything to happen to her and she is due 2/7/09.So if anyone has any advise will you please tell me because i don't really know what to do....should we go through c-section? Have them regularly? But i don't know and that's scary and this is my first time dealing with a pregnant dog and might have some issues because of her size!!:(

Answer
Hi Marie. After she hits day 50, you can have x-rays done to see about how many there are, and if there are any really big ones that may cuase trouble. After looking at the x-rays, your vet may be able to tell you if he thinks a section if called for or not. If she is to have them naturally, call your vet as soon as her labor starts just in case you need him. If he's hard to teach after hours, spend the next few weeks contacting other vets that you can get hold of in case of an emergency. Your best bet would be to make sure she gets plenty of exercise, don't let her get too fat. A fat, out of shape dog usually can't whelp. Talk to your vet and see what he thinks about her whelping. It is scary, but you can get through this. I'm going to give you a web url, visit that page and look around. After that, feel free to write back if you have any more questions.
