Question
Hello,

Our lhasa dog just got done weaning her first litter and it looks like she may already be in heat.  Is that common for them to be in heat so quickly or is it just the hormones from weaning?  Also, is it okay to be
breed again so quickly behind the last litter of puppies?

Thank you for your time!
Shan

Answer
Hello Shanda --

Typically, most females will come into heat every six months.  Although, personally we have a female that comes in every 5 like clock work.

So after 2 months of gestation, and presumably 2 months with the pups, she may show signs of coming into her next heat.   However I caution on doing back to back breedings with no more than a few weeks rest.

A female needs time to recover and get back in to shape both physically AND mentally.  There are considerations for instance, was her first whelp difficult, the age of the female, the physical well being and health of your female. Has she been checked over by your vet and given the green light?
