Yorkie Poo breeding

Question
Hello,
I am going to be breeding my 1 year old Yorkie Poo on her next heat. I have a friend who has a 3 year old 5 pound Toy Poodle that will be the stud. This is the first time breeding for both of them and I was wondering how I should go about this. I am planning on letting them meet before she is in heat. when is she going to be ready to mate? some people say the 11th day into her heat is when i she will stand. and also when we are at his house should I just let them do their thing or should I hold her while he figures it out? And one more thing. How many times should I let them mate? is it every other day until she won't let him near her anymore?

Answer
Hi Matt

It depends on when your female is ovulating.  The number one reason a mating doesn't take place is timing. Progesterone will tell you when she's ready.

Otherwise, you can start bringing them together around day 9 and bring them every day until a tie happens.  Once you have a tie you can do a single breeding every other day until she doesn't stand any longer.  Let them spend 15 - 30 minutes together than take them apart.  Don't leave them together the entire time. It will exhaust and frustrate the male if he "doesn't get any action".

Try letting them do it naturally before intervening. Some males shut down when handled.

How big is your female?  Is there a chance that she will need assistance whelping?

Good luck
