Question
i have a patterdale bitch who is just 8 months old she came into season, and i didnt realise this until i caught my male patterdale tied to her, i realise that she is probably pregnant, as i cant tell you how many times he has caught her. i dont know anything about breeding, and this is a first for me the male is approx 4 yrs old. they are unseperable at times. how long would it be before she gives birth, and do i need to get the male out of the way. should i seek advice from the vet,i feel that i have let the bitch down in many ways. please help thankyou

Answer
Well, to be honest, 8 months is REALLY young to be having puppies. You should probably take her to the vet, and see what he thinks. He may suggest an abortion because of her age. Remember, that just because there was a tie doesn't absolutely positively mean she's pregnant. If your vet thinks it would be safer for her to have the puppies, then she would be due about 63 days after they bred, or 9 weeks. Don't beat yourself up too hard, accidents do happen, and you do seem to be really concerned here. The only thing that you can do now, is to take her to the vet. If she has the puppies, just take really good care of mom and babies. If you have no intention of breeding anymore, just have one or both neutered. And if you need anymore help, please feel free to contact me!
