Question
My poodle, Emily, had babies last night!  She gave birth to 3 puppies, 1 of them past away a few hours later.  Emily seemed okay about it.  She is nursing the other 2 puppies and they are only nursing on only 2 nipples.  The other 4 are hard as a rock!  It seems that it is very uncomfortable for her and don't want her to be in any pain.  Is there any home remedy that I can try before I take her to the vet?  I know on humans that a cabbage leaf works, would it work for Emily?

Answer
Hi Kristen.  I would try to put the puppies up to the nipples and encourage them to nurse from the swollen mammary glands.  Warm towels will also help.  Keep an eye on the mammary glands, and contact your vet if any of the following:  Hot to the touch, purplish color, foul odor, or if the mother seems to be in pain.  All of these symptoms can be signs of an infection and must be cared for immediately.

Good luck and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have additional questions.

Sincerely,
Penny DiLoreto
