Question
I am looking for a stud for my female shih tzu. She only weighs 8 pounds and is 1 1/2 years old. I have noticed that shih tzus vary in weight. My question is would an 18 pound male be to large for her?? Also is it ok to have them meet and get to know eachother before we mate them.
thanks

Answer
Hi Lisa

With most all breeds the males are bigger than the females.

It's important to remember not only the size of the male but the size of all the dogs in the background on both sides.    It there are big boys in both their pedigrees chances are she'll have larger puppies.

It is extremely important for them to meet prior to breeding.  It makes for an easier "association".

Good luck
